Regular eye examinations are important for everyone — whether or not you currently wear glasses. A thorough eye test doesn’t just check how well you can see; it also assesses the health of your eyes and can sometimes flag wider health concerns such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Gordon Batham offers private, NHS-funded and children’s eye examinations. Depending on your needs and any additional testing required, your appointment will typically last around 15–30 minutes.
For deeper clinical insight, we offer enhanced imaging and advanced assessment options including retinal photography, OCT scanning and OPTOS wide-field retinal imaging (where appropriate). These services can support earlier detection, clearer monitoring over time, and added reassurance when symptoms or risk factors are present.
BOOK ONLINEChildren’s vision is one of our specialities. We use paediatric testing methods — including objective screening for babies and very young children with the Plus-Optix device — so we can assess vision accurately without relying solely on responses. All children aged 18 and under are entitled to an NHS-funded eye examination.
Myopia (short-sightedness) is increasing in children, and early intervention can make a real difference. We offer evidence-led myopia management options including Essilor Stellest lenses and MiSight daily disposable contact lenses, alongside practical guidance for parents.
BOOK ONLINEWhen it comes to technology, no one else comes close. At Goatman & Batham, we’ve invested in the most sophisticated diagnostic equipment available-allowing us to offer the best clinical care.
Adults should have a comprehensive eye exam every 1-2 years, or annually if you're over 60, have diabetes, or wear glasses/contacts. Children should have their first eye exam by age 3-5, then every 1-2 years unless otherwise recommended. Your optometrist may suggest more frequent visits based on your individual eye health needs.
Please bring your current glasses, contact lenses (and case), and a list of any medications you're taking. Also bring your insurance card and a form of identification. If you have previous eye exam records or prescriptions, these can be helpful for comparison.
Optomap is a wide-field digital imaging system that captures a detailed, panoramic view of your retina in seconds. This non-invasive technology allows us to see up to 80% of your retina in a single image, helping detect eye diseases like diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, and macular degeneration early. The scan is quick, comfortable, and doesn't require eye dilation.
No, the OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography) scan is completely painless and non-invasive. You simply look into the machine while it takes detailed cross-sectional images of your retina using light waves. The entire process takes just a few seconds and feels similar to having a regular photograph taken.
Most adults and children should have an eye examination every two years. We may recommend more frequent checks if you have diabetes, a family history of glaucoma, or you’re over 70. Contact lens wearers need to be seen at least once a year.
You may qualify if you are under 16, aged 16–18 in full-time education, over 60, diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma, or you receive certain benefits. We can check your eligibility when you visit.
